About the Lismore Base Hospital : Lismore Base Hospital first opened in 1879 with eight beds. It was led by a husband and wife team who were the matron and wardsman. At the time it was known as the Lismore and Richmond River Hospital. Today, Lismore Base Hospital is a major public teaching hospital in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, located in the city of Lismore. It has approximately 260 beds, and serves as the primary hospital and recognised trauma centre for the Northern New South Wales Local Health District.
